  • Jim Cowles Receives Dallas Bar Association Trial Lawyer of the Year Award
    October 2005

    Jim Cowles was presented with the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award at the Dallas Bar Association's Annual Bench Bar Conference, held October 20-22 at the Horseshoe Bay Marriott Resort.  The award is presented annually to a lawyer with a long career as a consistently outstanding trial lawyer who exhibits highly ethical and professional conduct.

  • Israeloff Receives Leadership Award
    October 2005

    On October 27, 2005, Sim Israeloff, in his capacity as mayor of Fairview, Texas, received a Municipal Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal League for Management Innovations in cities under 25,000 population.  This is the second year in a row that Fairview has been recognized by the municipal league for management excellence.

    On September 9, 2005, Charlie Frazier served as a presenter at the State Bar of Texas Advanced Civil Appellate Law Seminar in Austin.  Charlie spoke on "Bombshells in the Record:  The Ethics of Assessing and Citing the Appellate Record."  The article is available here.

  • Brewer Receives Teaching Honor
    August 2005

    Glenda Brewer has been recognized for her continued service to the Legal Studies Division of El Centro College in Dallas.  In August, 2005 she was presented with a longevity award for teaching 20 semesters of courses to prospective paralegals.

  • C&T Co-Sponsors Real Estate Symposium
    June 2005

    The Real Estate practice group of Cowles & Thompson, P.C. will co-sponsor the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce Real Estate Symposium on June 22, 2005.  Richard W. Fisher, newly appointed President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas will be the keynote speaker.  Steve Brown, Real Estate Editor of the Dallas Morning News, will also be a featured speaker.  Rick Barrett, a member of Cowles & Thompson's Real Estate practice group will also participate in a panel discussion on "Mold Issues & Fraudulent Transactions In The Real Estate Industry."   An agenda of the event can be found on the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce web site.

  • Sim Israeloff and David Johnson obtain Good Results for Our Client
    May 2005

    On May 17, 2005, Sim Israeloff successfully defended a business client and won a summary judgment dismissing claims against the client.  The plaintiff had alleged that the client was using a corporate entity as his "alter ego" and had made improper asset transfers to his wife and the company.  After three hearings and extended briefing, the Dallas District Court ruled that the plaintiff's claims were all barred as a matter of law and signed a Final Judgment in favor of the client.  Assisting in the summary judgment were C&T attorneys David A. Johnson and Christina M. Wemmer.

  • Glenda Brewer speaks to Local Media on Estate Planning Issues
    April 2005

    Looking for experts to discuss end-of-life medical decisions during coverage of the Terri Schiavo case, local radio and television stations and print publications, as well as Internet news sites and syndicated news services, all turned to Glenda Brewer.  She provided the answers about living wills (known in Texas as a "directive to physicians") that were on the forefront of many American minds.  "It is important to make your wishes known now to those who are closest to you now, when you are able, and then put those same wishes in writing," was her message.  "Having a prepared living will is not an ironclad guarantee your wishes will be followed, but it creates a clear line of authority on who will be asked to make the decisions for you."

  • Ben Love Honored with Memorial Scholarship
    January 2005

    The State Bar of Texas Insurance Law Section has announced the creation of the Ben Love Memorial Scholarship at SMU Dedman School of Law, to honor the memory of the Cowles & Thompson attorney who died in June 2004 after a long battle with cancer.  The scholarship will be awarded annually to a second or third year law student who has completed the insurance law course at the law school.
