Spotlight: Cowles & Thompson Goes 25 for 25 in 2003-2004

In August 2003, Cowles & Thompson celebrated its Twenty-Fifth Anniversary. During that time, the Dallas community has been good to us; we at C&T are grateful for the kindness shown to us over the past twenty-five years. In 2003-2004, we pledged to repay that generosity with ""Twenty-Five Acts of Kindness."" Cowles & Thompson attorneys and staff each donated 25 hours of their time providing volunteer services to one or more of the following charitable groups:

November 2003

                                                                                                  

1.   North Texas Food Bank -- in November, Cowles & Thompson donated $5,000 to the North Texas Food Bank, an organization that seeks to eliminate hunger by distributing food and grocery products through a network of nonprofit organizations, while providing education and increasing community awareness on issues of hunger.

 

2.  Salvation Army -- in November and December 2003, Cowles & Thompson volunteers donated their time at the Salvation Army Angel Giving Trees at Northpark and Valley View Malls.

 

December 2003

3.  North Texas Food Bank -- in December, Cowles & Thompson volunteers participated in a food drive collecting canned goods, dry goods, and beauty products to be distributed by the North Texas Food Bank.

4. Adopt-A-Family -- in December, Cowles & Thompson employees adopted a family for the holidays, donating much-needed clothing for a single mother with two boys.

                                                                                           

5. Genesis Women's Shelter -- in December, Cowles & Thompson employees kicked off an ""In-Kind Donation"" drive to benefit the Genesis Women's Shelter, which provides aid for over 600 women and children each year who flee their homes due to domestic violence. C&T collected 521 items and  $226 in cash for the shelter.

6. Carter BloodCare/Jingle Bell Run -- on December 9, 2003, Cowles & Thompson employees participated in the Jingle Bell Run, a yearly event benefiting Carter Bloodcare.

                          

                                                                

January 2004

7.  Dallas Museum of Art -- on January 8, 2004, C&T volunteers   Charlie Frazier, Angela Washington, Shalanda Hearn, and Shawn   Williams helped out at the Dallas Museum of Art, as it hosted children   from the Boys & Girls Club of Dallas.  Tariq Abdul-Wahad of the Dallas Mavericks gives regular tours to kinds from the Boys & Girls Club, and our employees were there to serve refreshments and provide other help.

8.  Bowl For The Cure -- on January 30, 2004, fourteen Cowles & Thompson employees joined with other bowlers to ""Bowl for the Cure,"" a nationwide initiative to benefit the fight against breast cancer. Our bowlers raised more than $5,000 through donations and sponsorships.

9.  KERA Radio Pledge Drive -- on January 30, 2004, volunteers Paul Dalton, Bill Siegel, Quiana Washington, and Shawn Williams worked the phone banks during public radio station KERA's winter pledge drive.

February 2004

10.  Stewpot -- Cowles & Thompson employees served food to underprivileged individuals at the Stewpot on February 6, 2004.

11.  North Texas Food Bank -- on February 18, 2004, C&T employees stocked canned goods for distribution as part of the Food Bank's People and Nutrition in Dallas program.

March 2004

12.  Cowles & Thompson Blood Drive -- on March 5, 2004, Cowles & Thompson held its annual blood drive to benefit Carter BloodCare.  Twenty-five C&T employees donated blood during the drive.

13.  KERA Television Pledge Drive -- On March 10, 16, and 19, 2004, C&T employees Quiana Washington, Jonathan Spigel, Chris Brasure, Greg Lensing, and Stacy Welch worked the phone banks during public television station KERA's spring pledge drive.

April 2004

14.  YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas -- on April 17, 2004, volunteers Tricia Gunter, Shawn Williams, and Dolores Wolfe participated in the YMCA Ecology Challenge, which demonstrated for children ages 13-18 the problems facing our environment, and solutions for these ecological problems.

                                                                                         

15.  AIDS Services of Dallas -- on April 30, 2004, employees from Cowles & Thompson donated and served dinner to the residents of one of the ASD facilities.

May 2004

16.  The Family Place -- in May, 2004, Cowles & Thompson employees donated food and beauty items to gift baskets provided to the residents of The Family Place, a Dallas organization that provides emergency shelter, supportive living, child development services and counseling to families who have been victims of domestic violence.

17.  Charities Home Center -- on May 10, 2004, C&T employees Cheryl Cox, Deborah Driver, Shalanda Hearne, Christy Trimble, Debbie Wise, and Billie Wooldridge volunteered at the Charities Home Center, sorting, hanging, and tagging clothes for sale at its resale shop.

18.  Habitat for Humanity -- from May 15 through May 22, 2004, Cowles & Thompson volunteers Steve Stapleton and Donna Grigg worked on Habitat for Humanity's May Blitz, which resulted in the building of 21 new homes for low-income families.

June 2004

19.  Dallas Bar Foundation -- on June 9, 2004, Cowles & Thompson donated $2,000 to the Dallas Bar Foundation, which funds the Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarships at SMU Dedman School of Law.  The 3-year full-tuition scholarships are awarded to three minority law students each year.

July 2004

20.  Children's Medical Center -- on July 1, 2004, Cowles & Thompson employees visited with, entertained, and performed magic for a group of child patients at Children's Medical Center.

21.  Arts District Friends -- on July 27, 2004, Cowles & Thompson donated $1,000 to the Arts District Friends, an organization whose mission it is to champion the Dallas Arts District and to enliven and promote the District as a place for people.

22.  Genesis Women's Shelter -- during the Summer of 2004, Cowles & Thompson donated gently used office furniture to the Shelter for its use.

October 2004

23.  J. L. Turner Legal Association Foundation -- on October 29, 2004, Cowles & Thompson donated $2,500 for the Foundation's Annual Scholarship Gala, the proceeds of which provide scholarships to minority law students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

November 2004

24.  SPCA -- on November 12, 2004, C&T employees helped to walk and play with the dogs at the SPCA's main location in downtown Dallas.

Year-Round

25.  Legal Aid of Northwest Texas  -- throughout all of 2004, Cowles & Thompson attorneys accepted a total of 28 cases for pro bono clients.
