Spotlight: In Memoriam: Ben Love
It is with great sadness that Cowles & Thompson announces the passing of Ben Love, who died on June 17, 2004 after a battle with lymphoma. Ben was a person who was ""full of life"" -- he was constantly upbeat, optimistic, and full of joy.
A firm employee described Ben as not ""just a person -- he was an experience. He was one of those people you may only encounter once in your life, but you never forget them."" He was a great lawyer, teacher, and friend -- but more than anything he was a great man. He will be sorely missed.
At the time of his death, Ben was the head of the Coverage and Complex Insurance Litigation Practice Group, as well as the Practice Development Committee at Cowles & Thompson. His diverse background in the insurance industry included many years of employment as in-house counsel to three major property and casualty insurers, prosecution of insurance fraud actions on behalf of a number of insurers, and litigating coverage disputes in matters involving all types of insurance policies. Ben was a frequent author and lecturer on insurance coverage issues, bad faith risk management, and other insurance topics. He was also the 2004 Chair of the Dallas Bar Association Tort and Insurance Law Section, and especially enjoyed his first love, as co-teacher of the firm's Bible study group.
Ben is survived by his wife Irene, and his children Joshua and Erin.
January 13, 2005: The State Bar of Texas Insurance Law Section has announced the creation of the Ben Love Memorial Scholarship at SMU Dedman School of Law, to honor the memory of the Cowles & Thompson attorney who died in June 2004 after a long battle with cancer. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a second or third year law student who has completed the insurance law course at the law school.
